Winter is Coming

No, really, it isn’t just a Game of Thrones line! Winter will be here in a few short months, which means it is the perfect time to do seasonal maintenance.

Before you do anything, always remember to keep safety first when you’re on the roof!

If you’re unsure of what Roofing Maintenance consist of here are some ideas to get you started.

  1. The roof only does its intended job, of keeping your house dry if it functions as it was meant to. That means water cannot stand for extended periods of time. It must run to the gutters and drain. So, the first order of business, is getting those clean.
    • Pay attention when you clean your gutters. Heavy amounts of shingle grit can be a sign that the longevity of your roof is running short.
  2. It is better to trim limbs, than to pay someone to figure out how to get it off of the roof and repair the hole it made. Heavy ice and winter accumulation can snap limbs just like storms do in the Spring.
  3. Now that the roof is clean, look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles. It is better to catch minor issues when they are simple to fix, than once it has advanced.
  4. If you have gaps in your metal flashing, you might consider waterproof roofing sealant.
  5. You might also consider inspecting the ceiling and upper walls of the interior for signs of leakage, if you do find signs of the above.
  6. Always remember if you are not confident in your ability to safely get on the roof yourself, do not hesitate to call a professional.

Until next time!
